Abstract There are many ways to know a social and cultural level of each country. Among them, theme museums are the best places not only to understand a history, but also to watch a life style and a culture level. These museums are comprised of various mass distinguished by various combining factors. A combination of unit spaces makes mass design. The mass design is the result of the program that takes up various conditions. This thesis has the purpose to provide basic material through analyzing plan type and mass composition of the theme museums and understanding the relativity of them so that new theme museums can be designed in a right direction. So I chose independent museums that opened within recent 10 years, and finally selected middle & small size's theme museums. The results from the case study are as follows. First, the basic type had a symmetrical arrangement of exhibit rooms. On the other hand, center-hall enter type, around the center-hall type, and guidance type had a asymmetrical arrangement. Second, as going through mass segmental rate, the basic type is the lowest, followed by around the center-hall type, guidance type, and center-hall enter type. Third, the basic type and center-hall enter type were functional mass design, and around the center-hall type and guidance type were abstract mass design. It showed that around the center-hall type and guidance type had free design style by comparison with the basic type and center-hall enter type.
