Abstract |
Following the topographical features in the downtown of Seoul, narrow alleys were formed step by step. These alleys defined the shape of parcels. The buildings' shapes and arrangements were also affected by the shape of the parcels. Under the name of the functional modernization, the enhancement of land-use potentials, and the expansion of infrastructure in the downtown area, however winding alleys and small scale buildings along the alleys have been substituted by high-rise office buildings with wide straight roads and parking lots. In this process, the locality of alleys which had been slowly formed through 600 years of history has been largely damaged. This study explores a new rehabilitation methodology that preserves the unique characteristics of alleys in the downtown of Seoul. |
