Abstract |
This study presented a critical member selection procedure for building structures subjected to progressive collapse based on column removal scenario. A MATLAB-based program was developed to automatically remove all columns one by one, evaluate the member forces, and to detect a critical member which causes progressive collapse once it is removed. To verify the accuracy of this program and the validity of the linear elastic analysis procedure in finding out critical members, the analysis results were compared with the results from nonlinear static and dynamic analysis methods. The analysis results showed that the critical members selected by the developed program generally included those determined by nonlinear dynamic procedure. This is encouraging considering that the main purpose of the developed program is to find out probable candidates for more accurate but time consuming nonlinear dynamic analysis. |
