Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of qualitative changes of communal space planning in Korean Apartment complexes. 'Improving the quality of human lives' is the core factor of 'sustainable development' and it is important to provide communal spaces with good quality for better lives. The quality of living environment could be substituted with the quality of certain spaces existing in cities. The priorities of future planning can be deduced by analysing the current states. For the analysis, communal spaces in selected apartment complexes are divided to three dimensions according to the spatial properties which are 'environmental dimension', 'mobile dimension' and 'community dimension'. Nineteen apartment complex samples constructed from 1970s to 2000s were investigated by each category of the three dimensions based on architectural planning reviews and field researches to deduce the core changes of communal space planning throughout 40 years.
