Abstract In this paper, the blast resisting performance of the CFT columns was compared with that of the typical reinforced concrete columns and the reinforced concrete columns strengthened with steel jacket. AUTODYN which is a specialized hydrocode for the analysis of explosion and impact was used to simulate the structural behavior of the columns under the blast loading. The interaction between concrete and surrounding steel plates was modeled with two modeling methods, friction option and join option. The results from the frictional experiment were adopted to determine the friction coefficient in friction option. The CFT columns which have a similar P-M diagram with a reinforced concrete column were also investigated to compare the blast resisting performance and the static load resisting performance. According to the analysis results, the CFT column and the column with steel jacket showed much better blast resisting performance than the normal reinforced concrete column.
