Abstract The purpose of this study is to find out urban tissue of detached housing area in Gangnam. The analysis of the Young-dong municipal housing, which is a collective detached-housing built in Gangnam Gu in the early 1970’s, will explain characteristics of detached housing area in Gangnam on political, economical, and social viewpoints. It will also provide information about how the subject housing can be further improved in the future. The result of the analysis are as follows; First, the change of detached housing area owes to three factors: increasing demands for low rental houses in Gangnam, high profits from rental houses, and the housing policy to increase the supply of rental house. Second, the types of development were various based on location, urban structure, etc. However, the most common form of newly built houses is studio, which is widely known as one-room apartment. Therefore, there is no difference in space programs among housing types. Third, while the high density housing solved the housing shortage problem, there have been many side effects caused, such as overcrowded-ness, poor landscape, and shortage of service facilities. Finally, the detached housing area in Gangnam is expected to be greatly affected and reshaped by high density plot in the future. It will not be the large scaled redevelopment project which will bring noticeable changes to it. Therefore, we are in need of an applicable housing policy, which will bring desirable improvement to current housing system and also conclude the density increase problem.
