Abstract In this study, the researcher interpreted Venturi’s architectural language semiologically. And he drew applicability of signs which were able to establish communication between architecture and observer. The important characteristic that the subject of sign which is based on Saussure's Linguistics can apply to the architecture in connection with the Hotel du Department de la Oaute-Garonne are as follows. Frist, the architecture built in the city symbols social, structural, and cultural context. And it can create the architectural space. Second, architect’s encoding and the observer’s decoding are signification of signs which will be able to accept another function other than main function by coding architectural function. Third, mannerism which can be flowed in the historic tradition conventionally was borrowed. And through the decodification it can reconstruct with the architectural value by disassembling the content of conventional sign. Fourth, in the architecture, the semiotic function of binarism can be applied internal space and external space by linking or opposing. Therefore, architectural sign can provide the observer with architectural space by contemplating the gap between signifier and signified which are neither truth nor lie in material and constructive universality.
