Abstract The mat-building is one of the urban architectural alternatives appearing in the 1960s in the urban growth and increase of population. The architects of Team10, Smithson, Candilis, Josic, Woods, etc developed this prototype, and another groups such as metabolism, archigram, GEAM share the idea of mat-building. The characteristics of mat-bulding are agglomeration, changeability, transformability, network, transporting infrastructure, circulation, mobility, repetition of module, artificial decks, superposition of decks, etc. In the 1990s, the mat-building reappears in the architectural topos, but in different forms. This study intends to analyse the characteristics of mat-building of the '60s and that of the '90s, and to compare them. The projects of OMA, MVRDV, SANAA show the characteristics of '90s mat-building such as inclined plate, rhizome, field, landscape. The concept of mat-building makes think together architecture, city, landscape and environment. This study will show the evolution of mat-building and its meaning.
