Abstract Previous researches have been done to suggest the ‘visual structure analysis’ method of analyzing the spatial order based on the visual-perceptional properties of architectural space and apply it to the analysis of the Korean traditional housing. The visual structure analysis method concentrates on the concept of ‘visual axis’ constructed by varied visual elements existing in architectural spaces. However, this method largely relies on the subjective, intuitional aspects rather than on the objective, logical aspects of architectural spaces in terms of its methodology. This subjectiveness introduces possibilities for weakening the objectivity required for the analytical methods on architectural space, and lends room for researchers’ arbitrary interpretations. In this context, this study aims to develop the objectivity of visual structure analysis through the logical investigation of the physical substance of visual axis and the quantification of it which is the core notion of the analysis. For this, ‘Directed Isovist’ and ‘Weighted Skewness’ index were developed on the theoretical basis of Benedikt’s Isovist, which were then applied to the previous study cases to examine the potentials for the objectification and quantification of visual structure analysis.
