Abstract The purposes of this study were to identify the Japanese Kyedan(戒壇) layout and the characteristics of its form and to estimate the possible existence of the Korean Kyedanyulwon(戒壇律院). There were four main findings: first, the Japanese Kyedan was in a Garam(伽藍) format around the Kyedandang(戒壇堂) with Kyedan; second, Japan's three major Kyedanwons(戒壇院) need a more proper title, Kyedanyulwon, compared with Dosun(道宣)'s "Kyedandokyung(戒壇圖經)" and "Kiwonsadokyung(祇洹寺圖經)"; third, while they seem to have followed the Chogunkyedan(初建戒壇) in the form of Kyedan, their layout is different from that of Kyedanyulwon in "Kyedandokyung" and "Kiwonsadokyung," mostly being located west of the Buddhist temple; and finally, the Beopcheon-Temple site and Hoeam-Temple site, which are estimated to have had Kyedanyulwon, have a similar layout to the Kyedanwon of Dongdaesa(東大寺) with the Kyedandang in the center, the auditorium in the back, and the Buddhist nunnery in both sides.
