Abstract The use of BIM-based energy performance assessment during the design stages is believed to be essential to achieve energy-conscious green buildings. Interoperability between BIM-based design tools and energy performance analysis tools enables information exchange between different applications. BIM-based simulation models are used to evualate various design alternatives and achieve energy conscious green design. However, BIM interoperability is still controversial in design phase of a building project. This paper presents a detailed investigation and comparative study of the differences between data-centric interoperability and process-driven interoperability approaches. The authors elaborate on aforementioned two approaches, summarize their consequences, and present a real application of the DAI (Design Analysis Integration) prototype to a building in the conceptual design stage. The selected building is a library building with a floor area 8,000. Three design alternatives of the building in a conceptual design stage were studied. In order to analyze interoperability results between BIM-based CAD applications and building energy analysis tools, Revit Architecture and EnergyPlus were selected. In particular, the authors developed an automatic data translation from gbXML to IDF in MATLAB GUI (Graphical User Interface). This paper shows that meaningful information can be delivered to DM(Decision Maker) based on the process-driven interoperability using BIM.
