Abstract The purpose of this study was to suggest a concrete concept of underused multi-dimensional space which consists of underused site, unused architecture and the combination of the two. The importance of underused multi-dimensional space and space renewal has increased rapidly in urban condition in terms of the cycle of urban space's life and death. Characteristics of space renewal have been analysed through 3 case studies including Zollverein, Alveole 14, and Seattle Olympic Park with consideration of the causes and effects. The causes of underused multi-dimensional space are categorized into 4 reasons. The analyzed factors comprise urban elements (site, street, park, and infrastructure), and building and architectural urban elements (program, shape, layout, facade, and material). The findings of this study have yielded better understanding of underused multi-dimensional space and show design characteristics based on different approaches and have enabled proposal of design checklists and creation of the map of the underused multi-dimensional space.
