Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify alternative programs of architectural history in five-year architecture professional degree system. For 2 years from 2007 to 2009, we have surveyed the architectural education curricula of 73 universities in Korea and investigated the current status of architectural education in Japan, China, USA and Europe. Compared to other countries, Korean architectural history education has several problems such as the lack of awareness about the importance of architectural history as a theoretical education, the insufficient connections between other subjects for architecture major as well as other history subjects, and the lack of diversity in teaching methodology. In order to overcome these problems, we emphasized on the education of world history and transnational history, history as architectural theory, and regional architectural tradition. Furthermore, we tried to apply the alternative programs to the current educational field, which expanded the scope of educational contents through the introduction of new teaching methods such as writing, design and construction.
