Abstract Studies on the prevention of defects in apartment houses have been conducted for the purpose of establishing systems for classifying the types of such defects, suggesting ways of reducing the defect guaranty money, and developing a defect management table. In particular, the studies on the management of defects that have been conducted focus on the process of managing the defects that have already been found. However, There is a dearth of studies on the prevention of defects at the apartment construction stage. As for defects in many cases, the hidden factors contributing to the occurrence of defects during the construction process will come into view at the stage of use, after the completion of the construction project. Therefore, by establishing management priorities, the occurrence of defects at the apartment use stage can be prevented or minimized. To solve these problems, examples of defects in the finishing work at the apartment moving-in stage were examined, and the factors that contribute to the occurrence of such defects were analyzed. Considering both the builders and the residents, management priorities were drawn, and preventive measures at the construction were suggested.
