Abstract |
Careful analysis of the choir seat positions of Korean Protestant Churches, which have been constructed since 1960, shows that most churches consider the choir seats as a specially designated space, and primarily place them by "the left side of the front of the sanctuary", secondarily by "the right side of the front of the sanctuary" and lastly in very rare church architecture at other positions. Also, the choir seat positions are different according to denominations, year of construction, pulpit positions and the plan types of the worship spaces. The following are the results of analyzing the meanings and the relations of the above-mentioned differences. Firstly, the choir seat is mostly situated by "the left side front of the platform" when the pulpit is by the right side of the platform. Secondly, in most cases of Methodist, Presbyterian and Holiness Church have their choir seats by "the left side front of the platform", and Christian Assembly of God by "the right front of the platform" and Baptist Church by "the rear side of the platform". Thirdly, recently churches have been placing choir seats less and less by "the left side of the platform" and more and more by "the right side of the platform". Fourthly, the choir seats are mostly situated by "the left side of the platform" of the churches whose worship space are square types and by "the right side of the platform" at the churches whose worship spaces are fan-types. Fifthly, church architecture which is situated at "gallery" could be seen only before the 1980s, some churches have placed their choir seats in the middle of "the congregation seats" since the middle of the 1980s, their numbers increasing around 2000s, and some churches have begun to have no choir seats at all since the middle of 1990s. |
