Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to understand the architects' designs as a prototype for the masses through Case Study House Program in the mid-twentieth century of the US. That period could be characterized as the development of the consumer culture, mass media, and the success of the market oriented houses. Therefore the architects of Case Study Houses were much more conscious of communicating with the masses than the early 20th century Modernism architects by publishing their designs through the magazine. They aimed to enable the masses to experience new construction technology and masses' dream house through the mass media. At the earlier stage, the interior space layout was focused among the architects reflecting the popular elements of the mass market housing like open plan and outdoor living area, while structural expressions like new materials and details, were more emphasized after 1950. However, those structural expression can be understood as the strategies to maximize the interior characters appealing to the masses through showing the integration of the spaces and the domestic realm. |
