Abstract This study was designed to consider symbolism and expressive technique of each facility, by analyzing crematory facilities, according to landscape images. The selected cases demonstrated that landscape images are formed through a complex composition of buildings and nature. This result was then analyzed from three perspectives; space design using landscapes and arrangement of buildings, a view of interior-exterior spaces and sequential design by the flow of time. As the result, it was found that there are several methodologies such as phenomenological approach, modernism abstraction and topographic trend, and that various combinations of materiality and immateriality, and abstraction and conception accentuate each characteristic from an expressive aspect. In addition, difference views of the world between the East and the West and landscape’s internal meanings influenced symbolism, placeness, metaphorical expression.
