Abstract The purpose of this study is to explore the effective method of architectural design education as a basic design education for the 1st year students of the department of architecture at the university by examining the contents and structure of the architectural design studio. For this purpose, the contents and results of the architectural design studio are compared with the contents of basic design course of the Bauhaus, and analysed by the structure of the theory of basic design education by Michael Jordan and David Kal. The results are as follows. First, the contents of the architectural design studio in this study meet the requirements of the curriculum of basic design course of the Bauhaus such as ability of dealing with basic formative elements, basic training course of form composition, and basic skill for architectural design. Second, the structure of the architectural design studio in this study fulfill the requirements of the theory of basic design education by Michael Jordan and David Kal, such as continuity, consecutiveness, overlapping in architectural deign education, and holistic experience.
