| Abstract |
The Commercial space was formed in northern premises of Seoul Railway Station under the convenient public transportation like tram and railway and consuming population since building railway station. It is transformed according to the change of transportation system, functional change of Seoul Railway Station and that of the other commercial space near the Seoul Railway Station. In addition the commercial space inside the station changed its configuration and role with relation to them. The purpose of this study was to analyze how the commercial space transformed in related to the Seoul Railway Station and then what happened in that interior space, The results of this study are as follows; The time-periodic characteristics of the commercial space in Seoul Railway station is divisible into four distinct periods; 1900-1939, 1939-1969, 1969-1989, 1989-present. The Gyeongsung Railway Station became a hub of the railway traffic based on geometrical benefits as Namdaemun area where was a gateway of logistics since Joseon Dynasty. From this situation, the Gyeongsung central wholesale market was built in the northern place of the Gyeongsung Railway Station on the Japanese Empire purpose of monopolizing of traffic and market. Since Korea gained independence, the public transportation changed from the railway to the automobile, therefore Seoul Railway Station was declined. Furthermore with the fastest-growing urban population in Seoul, the shape of market is changed from marketplace to supermarket. the wholesale market in northern premises of Seoul Railway Station was torn down after 1975. After the development of Seoul Railway Station through private financing in 1989, the commercial space was inner part of building and coexistence with railroad service facility. And then it become a modified marketplace' for serving many important functions in neighbourhood daily lives. |
