Abstract This study aims to analyze characteristics of spatial composition to identify planning problems of the existing crematory facilities’ spaces. Those characteristics divide types of union forms depending on complex composition methods of crematoriums and enshrinement and funeral facilities and also, each block is classified into dispersed type, intergrated type and compromised type depending on the integration or separation of crematory, enshrinement, funeral, management and waiting functions into unit building. To achieve the purpose of this study, it consists of three stages as follows. Firstly, a theoretical investigation was carried out, based on basic unit area of crematory facilities and understanding of spatial composition, and then, literature and survey analysis was conducted in relation to types of block and floor plans of crematory facilities to establish the standards of a case study. Secondly, based on the results, spatial compositions of domestic and foreign crematory facilities were analyzed for an empirical analysis of data. Lastly, common points and differences between domestic and foreign crematory facilities were identified through the investigation of their spatial properties, and problems were derived. Ultimately, this study would provide a fundamental frame for development of design standards of Korean crematory facilities in the future.
