Abstract |
In an effort to be patient and family-centered, hospitals have provided family zone within patient rooms. However, few studies have examined or verified effectiveness of having family area within patient rooms for family presence and their interaction with care givers. This study examines the effectiveness by conducting comparative observations between patient rooms that have family zone and does not. Observers recorded family presence and their interaction with caregivers every 30minutes from 7am to 7pm per day for three days for each type of patient rooms. Results show that family members were more present and interacted more with caregivers in patient rooms that had designated family zone while many family members were found in waiting area in the unit that had patient rooms without designated family zone. Based on the observations, the study concludes that providing designated family zone in patient rooms can increase family member’s presence and their interaction with caregivers. |
