Abstract The pedestrians in the commercial area stroll along the streets searching for the stores that match their purposes of visits or attract their attentions. This study aims to develop the sequential analysis method for the commercial streets from the viewpoint of the pedestrian. The index of group cohesion from sociometry is used to evaluate the store alignment in the commercial streets by store attributes. The method is applicable to extract the optimum route for the purpose of the visit in the commercial area. Shimokitazawa, one of the representative commercial area in Tokyo was chosen for the case study to verify the effectiveness of the analysis method.
