Abstract Building energy performance analyse that uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology have recently became popular in significance. In order to perform a successful BIM based energy analysis, it is necessary to secure the interoperability between BIM models and the building simulation programs. This study evaluates the interoperability between the BIM model(gbXML) and energy analysis program(EnergyPlus) to identify current limitations and problems of the interoperability. To enhance the interoperability, this study develops a data transformation technology(gbXML to IDF) using java programming based on XML parsing and conversion. Also, this study suggests a seamless data transform process that can calculate cooling and heating load for a building. Based on these technologies, this study developed BIM-based energy analysis tool, EDI(Energy Design Interface). Data Interoperability has been tested and validated through EDI with a case study.
