Abstract In recent 20 years, a great number of natural disasters have occurred in the world, but the emergency shelters(ES) for the displaced people who have lost their houses due to the natural disasters are expanding in a disorganized way, and so the shelters are in unstable conditions of the low thermal comfort level. To mitigate this situation, in this study the living space of the emergency shelter was constructed using the transparent polyethylene film as the material of semicircle type roof cover, and the solar energy-latent heat storage system for the heating instrument in the winter season was installed inside the living space, and the thermal performance of the heating system was tested. The results could be summarized as follows; 1. On a sunny day, the heating effect of the solar energy-latent heat storage system was little available at the ambient temperature of 5∼10℃, whereas at that of -5∼5℃ the heating effect of the system was available. 2. At the solar radiation of 680∼700W/m2, the temperature of the storage of the material PCM in the latent heat storage system increased to 44℃, the inside air temperature of the shelter was 37℃, and the difference between the temperature of PCM and the inside air temperature of the shelter was 7℃. 3. On a cloudy day, the solar radiation was 50∼220W/m2, one third of that on a sunny day, whereas the temperature of PCM increased to 20℃ higher than 13∼15℃ of the phase change temperature of PCM.
