Abstract |
This study attempts to analyze how Barragan's architecture has impressed contemporary society in an emotional aspect. 'Emotional Architecture' is the keyword throughout all of his works, which also incorporates his spatial philosophy. While taking into consideration the backgrounds from which his architecture was originated, namely mexican vernacular, this study tries to focus on the spatial order of his architecture based on how he tried to incorporate the space with his synesthetic architectural language. This emotional spatiality appears in various terms such as 1)particular juxtaposition of void and solid space, 2)layered experience passing through it, 3)invited nature to the wall space, and 4)synesthesia feature with material and details. The purpose of this study is to examine the way of embodying his unique instinct in specific architectural space. The principal goal underpinning this study is to study Barragan's work from the angle of the design process, with a view to illustrating how this process embodies the underlying essence of the architectural experience ; in other words, how it forms a synthesis of space, light, colour and materials. The methodology to accomplish 'Emotional Architecture' can be interpreted as the synesthetic architecture which stimulates multiple senses and the sense of memory and mental value simultaneously. |
