Abstract The significance of sustainability has been increasingly recognised all over the world. In architectural field also, many efforts have been made to develop the green building technology. Environmentally friendly facade system has been presented as one of the solution methods for the building environment system. This paper investigates the characteristics of environmentally friendly facade system types in Japan. In view of environmental sustainability aspects, generally some European countries are likely to be considered as the most developed countries and most of our related researches also have been focused to those countries so far. However, another advanced country in related field, Japan, has developed various systems according to their own atmosphere or environment. From this point of view, this paper focused on the analysis of cases in Japan to provide referential bases when developing our own systems. It will certainly be helpful to find out the most proper facade system under each their own environmental conditions. The paper has been divided into four sections in general : 1) outline of environmentally friendly facade system 2) characteristics of environmentally friendly facade system types of Japan 3) analysis of example buildings 4) conclusion and discussion.
