Abstract The study starts with a question about the authenticity in the "design of public space" or "civic design" that flourishes among current local governments in Korea 2000s, and suggests "programming of public space" as an alternative. For the purpose it defines the meaning of public space and meaning of design that translated in different terms, and institutionalization of design. As an indepth analysis Gwanghwamun Square was choosen and newspaper articles and profestional critics in journals. In conclusion, the study emphasize the necessity of sound programming of public space instead of adhering to design that current political campaign insist. Public space should be improved and managed to accept the fundamental needs of public.
