Abstract The purpose of this paper is to verify applicability of the thermal load prediction model of free-form buildings at the early stage in the design process. A simple free-form building was generated by using a 3D parametric design tool called Rhino. The geometry information of the building was extracted using Grasshopper form finite envelope meshes generated by the finite element method (FEM) tool. The result of the comparison between the proposed model and the TRNSYS 16 predicted annual heat gain, heat loss, and solar heat gains showed thar the proposed model would have 8-12% mean discrepancy. One may conclude that the thermal load prediction model has adequate reliability for estimating thermal load characteristic of a free-form building at the early stage of the free-form building design.
