Abstract This paper investigates the structural performance of the concrete spirally reinforced with high-strength reinforcement. The main test parameters were the yield strength of transverse reinforcement and cross sectional shape of specimen. 12 cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 150mm and a height of 300mm and 12 square specimens with a width 133mm and a height of 266mm were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. To evaluate the confinement effect of spiral reinforcement, the specimens tested in this study were designed to have no cover concrete. The observed results showed that the strength and ductility of circular specimens were improved as the yield strength of steel spirals increased. However, the confinement effect of square specimens was not significant than that of circular specimens.
