Abstract The purpose of this study is to deduce behavior of the elderly and space pattern through investigating their behaviors in 24hours for seven days and suggest the pattern of smart home service enhancing quality of lives for them. In this study, we discuss the method to deduce behavior pattern and highlight the potential possibility and application for behavior patten. The literature survey will primarily focus on the intelligent homes and related services, and the targets of diary method are 53 the elderly in Korea, aged between 53 and 65, kept the subjective diaries at their waking hours during the research. They were required to write down in their diaries what they did and where they were at every ten minutes. The result of this study were as follows ; 1) The proportion of each type of behavior presents that personal maintenance (44%) has the greatest representation out of the eight types of behavior, followed by leisure activities (16%), information activities (15%), chores (9%), transportation (5%), health management (4%), social activities (4%), and others (3%). 2) Main behavioral patterns showed relatively higher levels of frequencies in the morning and evenings by comparison early mornings and afternoons. 3) we created the matrix of behavior and space pattern through main behavior pattern. 4) Smart home service patterns are suggested by the matrix mentioned above.
