Abstract This study is to identify the possibility of real world applications for responsive kinetic facades. A methodology applied is to define the concept of sustainable responsive kinetic facade, to analyze its development, and then to conduct case studies of recent examples. The responsive kinetic facade provides optimized forms with precise responses and realtime adjustment to the external environment or users' preferences. Also, lighting, thermal, and air quality can be controlled with computer programs. Consequently, overall energy load can be reduced and the comfort level of users is enhanced. However, it is still in the experimental stage, and only a few projects have been implemented to date due to limitation on technology and costs. Despite these issues, the responsive kinetic facade has great potential to play a major role as sustainable envelope system in the near term.
