Abstract This study was designed to establish a model by which unlike the roads in the city largely used as a public space for vehicles, not for people, they could be used for people, when done by road diet. First, the basic policies and applicable models of using the public space of the roads were developed after the completion of collection of the studies previously conducted in connection with the public functions of the roads and the domestic and oversea case studies in connection with road diet. They indicated that on the basis of extra width of more than 50m, the typical geometrical structures of road for road diet were broken down into three categories : the center-oriented, the one-sided, and the divided, and among them, the center-oriented was mostly desired because of the ease in the obtainment of the space for something. In conclusion, the model of using the public space of the roads of Changwon is likely to be the one by which main crossroads in the city could have a smaller rotary which has liner green spaces in the center, and has one-way vehicle roads of three lanes, green spaces, or walking roads on both side.
