Abstract The purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristic of spatial use by examining care activity and circulation of care workers for care houses in city areas of Japan, where residential unit was designed by the concept of unit care - some ten elderly reside in each care house. Especially, by analyzing difference in the characteristic of spatial use of the care workers in three different residential units where physical environment and the condition of health of the elderly was different each other, this research produces the characteristic of architectural design of spatial composition which encourages to form amicable relationship between care workers and the elderly while minimizing burden of care workers. Therefore, the article suggests database being able to apply to the elderly welfare facilities in Korea. In conclusion, the rate of usage is high in mini-kitchenette, care worker's station where behaviors of communication with the elderly were frequently observed. Accordingly, it is desired that spatial composition of residential units is focused on these places.
