Abstract This study intends to find out characteristic of the generation of formaldehyde concentration produced in livingroom and rooms, first, with closed windows , second, with air cleaner operation, photo-catalyst installation, and opened openings in newly constructed apartment house. As a result, the level of formaldehyde concentration was higher than that of Korean Environmental Standard under closed windows case. And, it may be harmful for health by repeating to stay under closed windows. Therefore the solution is required to reduce its concentration. By operating air cleaner with VOCs filter, compared to non-operation, there was about 18% reduction effect of the formaldehyde concentration after 24 hours, though there was no reduction effect of it till 8 hours from starting to measure. Compared to closed windows, there was reduction effect of the formaldehyde concentration in half when photo-catalyst is installed on ceilings, walls, floors, door frames, and doors, etc in main room and room 2. Each room under closed windows had ventilation in every hour. There was huge deviation for the ventilation frequency based on room size and its frequency was getting increased when the opening areas are getting bigger. The level of the formaldehyde concentration in livingroom and main room was below that of Korean Environmental Standard even whole opening by side. However, regardless of opening windows area, room 1 and 2 which have relatively larger areas of windows than their volume can keep it below 0.1?, Korean Environmental Standard. In summary, the ventilation by opening windows in each room was the most noticeable effect to reduce the level of formaldehyde concentration based on evaluation of various cases including air cleaner operation, and photo-catalyst installation.
