Abstract The purpose of this study is to create an evacuation plan in response to the evacuation performance during acts of terror or fire for various subway station categories. Due to the fact that subway stations are high density underground spaces, the risk for large scale disasters is much higher. Hence, the existing precedent studies and guidelines were organized, and 10 different subway station categories were created by taking the characteristics of the subway platform stairs and the subway platforms into consideration. Seoul Metro's 120 stations were then classified into the various categories and the 3 most commonly found station categories are represented by the existing stations as follows: Jongno 5ga, Maebong, and Samsung Station. An evacuation simulation, using the program Simulex, was conducted on the selected stations and data regarding evacuation time and behavior was obtained to further develop an evacuation plan, which is a necessary component for architectural planning.
