Abstract |
Many column curve formulations have appeared since the inception of L. Euler's classic theory in 1759. This paper investigates the flexural buckling strength() calculated using the Allowable Stress Design Specification and the Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification of the American Institute of Steel Construction. Herein, it is pointed out that the exponential function of column curve formulation(LRFD) is hard to use in practice. Therefore, in this study, the simple parabola function is proposed for the inelastic buckling strength of the steel column loaded in uniaxial compression that is consistent with many design codes. The expressions for inelastic buckling strength formulation defined previously by Allowable Stress Design is used here. To verify the proposed equation, a total of 118 individual test results of steel columns is surveyed. The mean of the ratio of column strength to proposed flexural buckling strength is 1.089 indicating that the proposed strength curves are in good agreement with the tests. |
