Abstract |
Highly silicious limestone gravel (HSG) contains high volume of calcium carbonate and silica. It is a by-product material obtained from cement manufacturing process, and thus needs to be utilized in terms of waste management. This study investigates the effect of HSG on the mechanical properties of both normal and high strength concretes. For normal concrete, various amount of HSG was replaced with coarse aggregates to study the effect caused by replacing coarse aggregate with HSG. Various water to binder ratios were used to study the effect of HSC on high strength concrete. Results showed that the replacement of coarse aggregate with HSG showed similar mechanical properties to normal concrete without HSG. In high strength concrete, higher elastic modulus was obtained although all other mechanical properties were similar to reference concrete. It was found that the effectiveness of HSG on the slump, air content, compressive strength and elastic modulus of the concrete, were higher when HSG was used for high strength concrete. |
