Abstract This study is to analyze experiences of people in representation of spaces. The representation of spaces has been focused to carrier two kinds of experiences: Spatial characteristic properties and substantial inhabitation. However, these representations have been considered in the point of view of producers such as architects, interior designers, or artists instead of viewers, who has been intended to experience the spaces in the representations. This study performs interview with ordinary people to find what kinds of experiences they have seeing the representation of spaces, which are Alvar Aalto’s domestic spaces in this study because of their design processes regarding of inhabitation. According to the interview results, people’s experiences focused to be more immediate, materialistic and pictorial rather than analytical, conceptual. or storytelling. This result means that people who experiences the representational spaces has more attention to the concrete spatial properties than expectations of the producers of representations which cover the imaginary inhabitation as well as spatial characters.
