Abstract The number of one person households in Seoul has increased tenfold over the past three decades. Because the rents of 'Quasi-dwelling' and 'Urban-Life Housing' supplied by the private sector are too high, the residential stabilization of the low-income groups is threatened. The purpose of this study is to develop the rental housing types for the low-income one person household in Seoul. The low-income groups were categorized into three groups of the students, the elderly and the low-income single through the analysis of the residential characteristics of the one person households. Three housing types for these groups on the selected sites were developed and the feasibilities are evaluated. For the stabilization of the housing problem of the low-income group, the supply of the affordable housing should be increased through public funding or public land lease. Furthermore, the guidelines for the small housing are needed and the maintenances and the managements for the rental housing need to be systematized.
