Abstract Korean people have experienced changes of lifestyle resulting from industrial development and population growth for last a few decades. A pattern of fire incident is also much more various than before. Consequently, it causes an unexpected enormous damage of both human beings and properties. Therefore, we investigated a pattern of fire occurrence in urban residential area. However, a fire can be prevented by scientific protection and management methodology in advance by using a field survey and predicting a probability of fire occurrence. As a result, we suggested ranking and classifying various fire causes of residential areas by using Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). According to this, we finally designed a new tool for calculating a probability of residential fire risk, and made a GIS-based fire hazard map.
