Abstract Steel strip dampers have been used to reduce earthquake damage of structures by their plastic behavior. Prismatic strip is the most common shape of them but stress concentration occurs on its ends. Stress concentration results in early failure of the dampers under cyclic loading. Some modified shapes have been proposed but stress concentration rather occurs on their center when large displacement applied. In this study, new shapes were suggested in order to relieve stress concentration by improving previous shapes and performance evaluation of it was carried out under monotonic loading. Test results showed that new shapes are more efficient in energy absorption and alleviate stress concentration. In addition, they could resist very large load beyond their plastic strength.
