Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the spacial factors of circulation system on the mixed-use commercial buildings. The buildings studies are located in Hong Kong and Gangzhou, China. This study adopted literature review, drawing analysis and field study. The result of the literature search shows that the shoppers' circulation system are affected mainly by 6 factors : 'the access to and from the streets', 'the access from the MTR', the 'Central Space (central node)', the 'Welcome Space (entrance node)', 'the pattern of horizontal passages', and 'the vertical escalators and lifts'. The analysis of the factors of the buildings indicates as follows. Firstly, 'the access to and from the streets, and 'the access from the MTR' are affected by pedestrian volume in the facilities. Secondly, the 'Central Space (central node)' and the 'Welcome Space (entrance node) increase the visibilities which help people to recognize the whole layout of the buildings. Finally, 'the pattern of horizontal passages' is affected by the size and location of the 'Central Space (central node). In addition the vertical elements likes escalator, express-escalator, lifts enhance the role of the 'Central Space(central node). The result suggest that the above 6 factors are the key components which activate the mixed-use commercial buildings.
