Abstract |
As the demand for large scale datacenters and their energy consumption are rapidly increasing, the energy efficiency of such data centers is now becoming a very important national issue. IT equipment usually consumes about 50% of the total electricity in a datacenter, and total cooling energy consumption is roughly 35% or more of the total datacenter energy use. In this research, we describe major technologies to realize a green datacenter, which is much more energy efficient than traditional datacenters, from the viewpoint of cooling technologies. The mainly purpose of this paper is to identify cooling systems for optimizing energy efficiency. First, the design criteria of cooling systems were analyzed using quantitative data acquired by surveying 17 green data centers. And main technologies that have a significant impact on the reduction of energy in the data center cooling system were derived. We are also analyzed the contribution of the energy efficiency of each cooling technology. The objectives of this study were to provide a physical understanding of the factors which contribute to energy use by cooling system and provide a design guide for green datacenters. |
