Abstract The aim of the study is to suggest the design factors and guidelines to improve the value of landscape in hillside residential area. In order to evaluate the present condition of hillside residence, we gathered the problems and design factors by field investigation and document survey, then found out major factors for landscape improvement through expert questionnaire survey. After analyzing the data, the study found that the typical problems of hillside residential area: the view blockage, the degeneration of the natural environment, the shortage of infrastructure, and the narrow road. Specialists consider the color of building, preservation of geographical features, green corridor and disaster prevention design as important factors for hillside landscape improvement. The study suggests the design alternatives and guidelines with the citizen-participational landscape agreement in hillside residence. These results may be useful to plan hillside neighborhoods and houses. Further research is required to improve the design guidelines by drawings and illustrations and to reform regulations for practical designing.
