Abstract Recently, USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology is getting big interest throughout the entire industries. This study on the applicability of the RTLS(Real-time Location System) combined with one of those technology, the CSS(Chirp Spread Spectrum) to construction project site. With this technology, we can expect the efficient project management like the safety management which is one of the most important area. The more the spectrum of the RTLS technology is wide and variable, the more selection and application of it is difficult. For instance, the current GPS technology is one of the classical and general RTLS methods, but has some problems in detecting signals in the invisible construction areas like shaded area or indoor area of a construction building. We suggest that the CSS can be an alternative for these problems in the construction site with multipath resistance, long range, and location awareness. Moreover, it could be used in shaded area with more stable performance. The testing places are composed with four kind of indoor and outdoor spaces, and the indoor spaces are divided into column area, walls area and open area. After that we measure the locating error ratio respectively with the testing system of the CSS. As a result of this test, we could obtain highly precise level in the detecting the radio signal and also found some interesting problems. In terms of the indoor environment of construction project site, this study can provide a way of the applicability of the RTLS using the CSS based on this oncoming experimental results.
