Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to understand spatial characteristics of the joint-use library based on the types of the joint facilities. Today, public libraries have been changed by social movement and needs of visitors. These changes show that library is not just a space to read and study. Diverse alternatives are introduced to promote the sense of community and accomodate the diverse needs of users especially in United Kingdom and United States. Increasing number of new libraries are the joint-use library as an alternative. The joint-use library has a different space organization and administration methode from the general public library. It is very important to study the existing joint-use libraries to understand the general feature of the joint-use library and find the different characteristics of the joint-use libraries due to its combined facility. The result of the study shows that the joint-use library has various spatial configurations according to the joint facilities. The significant difference in the spacial configurations is that the libraries jointed with commercial and residential have strong boundaries between facilities, while the library jointed with cultural facilities have the flexible boundary often sharing entrances. |
