Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences of the planning characteristics of passive house in foreign cases and domestic cases, and to suggest the improvements of domestic passive house. Foreign countries have already had design know-how and construction experiences about passive house. In Korea, the interests and demands about passive house have been increased. So benchmarking successful cases of the advanced foreign countries will be of help to supplement the lack of domestic research results and experiences about passive house. The main results of this study are as follows; First, foreign cases have higher energy efficiency than domestic cases. Second, the performance of window frame insulation, air tightness are lack in domestic cases. Third, in the view of passive house design, many techniques of minimizing heat loss and maximizing heat gain are applied to foreign cases. Forth, in ecological aspects, many techniques of renewable energy facilities, rainwater recycling, rooftop greening are applied to foreign cases.
