Abstract The purpose of this study is to inquire into the aspects and features of the perceptual differences and temporal changes in residents awareness on the residential and sound environments in two regions. Based on the survey data of two regions, namely Namwon city and Mokpo city, it was analyzed the altered states of residents awareness in a period of ten or three years. It was found that there was no difference on the satisfaction of residential environment in each region. The awareness of Namwon residents in relation to development of the region were expanded to a step further, whereas that of Mokpo residents could not find the considerable changes. Owing to noise increasing caused by urbanization processes in both regions, the changes of awareness that is matching living environment noise with their surrounding environments were higher than in the past. As a result of changes of living environment through urbanization, the assessment of matching in relation to the rural environment sounds in Mokpo city was high. The sounds with a high frequency to preserve in the regions were pansori(traditional Korean narrative song) and ship's whistle respectively. The results found that it was verified the identity of the region through the sounds, and especially nature, tradition, local emotion, lifestyle and geographic location had a major influence on the phenomena and characteristics of sound culture.
