Abstract Apartments or apartment complexes are physically separated from the general local community by way of a gateway; apartment residents also describe them as "our (their) neighborhood." In a previous study, we examined the planning of outdoor space in apartment complexes and its impact on residents' space use behavior. This study aims to validate the relationship among residents' space use behavior, neighborhoodship and sense of community. A literature review and survey research were conducted for the purpose of this study. The meaning of outdoor space, neighborhoodship in Korean Apartments, and the definition and the measurement of Sense of community were reviewed. Three hundred and fifty three residents living in four different apartment complexes were questioned as part of the survey and causal relationship among the planning types, the outdoor space use, neighborhoodship, and sense of community was estimated by the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results showed a significant causal link between the planning types and use of outdoor spaces, use of outdoor space and neighborhoodship, and neighborhoodship and sense of community through the hypothetical models.
