Abstract This study was conducted to investigate and analyze national housing complexes constructed in Jangwi during the 1960s. A high-rise high-dense housing type, which is applicable to the current housing condition of the area, is suggested by basing on the results of previous related studies. The following are summaries of points made in the proposal of high-rise high-dense housing architecture to improve the residential environment of Jangwi-dong area: (1)Dilapidated buildings were first selected from the area under study, and a method of sector redevelopment was implemented (2)The proposal attempts to offer a direct open space to the surrounding buildings in relation with the passageway and stairs of existing buildings by forming a new open space in passageways (3) Space for pedestrians and vehicles is separated by installing a common parking lot in basement space and by constructing pedestrian passages within complexes (4) A new common space is formed within housing complexes by actively utilizing the space of the front entrance and interior hallways in each housing unit and by activating the function of balcony, which is connected to the hallway assigned to each housing unit and (5)Low-rise high-dense architecture is developed to secure extra space between buildings and to protect the invasion of daylight and privacy, which may be caused by a close arrangement of buildings. An inner court, which is created by an open hallway, is utilized to secure daylight and a scenic view.
